Yami Rajeev Reddy, a public prosecutor was appointed as a special public prosecutor along with S. Sambasiva Reddy under the special powers granted by sub-section (8) of the code of criminal procedure, 1973 ( Central Act 2 of 1974.)  Rajeev Reddy will be representing the Telangana Government to deal with the sensational case of businessman Chigurupati Jayaram homicide.  The Warrant of Appointment and a copy of the Notification of Appointment have been handed over to Rajeev Reddy on August 9th, 2021.

In 2019, Hyderabad shook when news about the gruesome homicide of noted businessman Chigurupati Jayaram came to light.  The police quickly took charge of the investigation and during the course of the investigation, it was revealed three police officers including an Assistant Commissioner Of Police, Ibrahimpatnam division, S. Malla Reddy was also accused.  This led to public outrage and the pressure was mounting on the Telangana Government prompting them to bring in two special public prosecutors to deal with the case.

A special court was appointed by the government to deal with the Chigurupati Jayaram case and the main hearings are scheduled to begin on October 20th, 2021.  Rajeev Reddy hails from the Nalgonda district of Telangana and grew up near Nagarjuna Sagar.  Having joined the Bar Council of Telangana in 2001, Rajeev Reddy worked as a public prosecutor for three years before deciding to pursue his academic interests.

A highly astute and learned prosecutor, Rajeev Reddy completed his L.L.B and his Masters from the Osmania University in Hyderabad.  Thereafter, he went on to pursue his second Master’s Law degree in the United Kingdom.  Rajeev Reddy is currently pursuing his postdoctoral thesis in the United Kingdom and is in his final year of his thesis when he was called in to represent the Telangana Government to handle the Chigurupati Jayaram case.

While being a highly learned lawyer who knows the legalities and technicalities of a police case in and out, Rajeev Reddy is a principled man.  He believes in standing for the people who have been denied justice.  So when the opportunity to represent the government in the Chigurupati Jayaram case arose, Rajeev Reddy took the case purely out of his interest to see justice delivered rightly.  Moreover, Mr. Reddy is not charging a single penny and has taken the case on a pro bono basis.

Over the course of the interview with Rajeev Reddy, he said while he is keen about seeing justice delivered in the Jayaram case, his passion lies in the academic field.  Currently pursuing his post doctoral degree in European Union Law, Rajeev Reddy wants to settle in a tenured teaching position or as an emeritus professor.  The Telangana Government is also highly committed to seeing the Chigurupati Jayaram case come to a justified conclusion due to the volatile nature of the case and after considering the public sentiments.  Rajeev Reddy wants to return back to the United Kingdom after the completion of this case to complete his post doctorate degree.

We sincerely congratulate Mr. Rajeev Reddy on his appointment as a Special Public Prosecutor and wish him all the best in dealing with the public interest case.
