The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) alerted 11 states including the Telugu State of Telangana, about the new mutant Serotype II, of the mosquito borne Dengue.

The Union Government sent an advisory to the government of 11 states to take precautions and ensure hospital facilities. The states which have been alerted to the disease are: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

In order to control the outbreak of the new variant of Dengue, the MoHFW advised the governments to have adequate testing kits and medicines to fight the seasonal disease of Dengue. They also asked the officials of the respective states to launch campaigns and awareness drives against the mosquito spread Dengue.

In addition, as per the sent advisory, the State Government has been asked to deploy a rapid response team, state health committee to ensure fever surveys, awareness and others.

Meanwhile, speaking about Telangana, a large number of dengue cases were reported in urban areas like Hyderabad, Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem in the past weeks. According to the State Health Department, the State reported hundreds of new cases taking the tally to more than 3,000 Dengue cases.

The Telangana Director of Public Health Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao, addressed the media and said vector-borne diseases are common in the monsoon season. He said the disease is likely to spread rapidly in mid October.

He also assured people of all the medical arrangements at Government run hospitals for the treatment of people. However, he urged people to be cautious and maintain hygiene, not to store water and stay alert of the water borne disease, Dengue and its new variant.
