The new management of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) is planning to increase bus fares by 25 paise per kilometre in Hyderabad. In regard to this, the TSRTC officials prepared a proposal and suggested a rise in the bus fare to cover the losses made during the Wuhan virus pandemic.

The suggestion was made during a high level meeting at Pragati Bhavan, Telangana. Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, chaired the meeting, held to discuss the TSRTC and its plan of action after the appointment of the new Managing Director (MD) and Chairman. Recently, the Telangana Government appointed Mr. V.C. Sajjanar as the TSRTC MD and Mr. Bajireddy Goverdhan as the TSRTC Chairman.

The meeting was concluded with the direction of Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao to prepare a detailed proposal regarding the bus fare and future plan to recover the losses. As of now the TSRTC is preparing a proposal, which is likely to be submitted to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government in a couple of days.

It is to be noted, last time the TSRTC increased the bus fare was in 2019. The bus fare was increased by 20 paise per kilometre, when the diesel price was Rs. 65 per litre. Despite a massive rise in the prices of diesel in the past 2 years, the bus fare remained the same. However, in 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and constantly rising diesel prices, the TSRTC are suffering losses, which would be recovered by increasing the bus fare.

If the bus fare is not increased this time, the TSRTC would have to suffer a burden of Rs. 500 crores or above to run smoothly for the public.

However, a final decision regarding the bus fares would be taken by the TRS Cabinet. The Telangana Government would conduct a Cabinet meeting after the TSRTC would submit a final proposal.

Stay tuned for further updates.
