On the 11th of February, Vijayalaxmi R. Gadwal was declared the new Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Mayor.

The mayoral elections were held after all the 150 GHMC corporators took the oath of office. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) candidate Vijayalaxmi won as the GHMC mayor over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Radha Reddy.

While Ms. Gadwal is the corporator of Banjara Hills, Radha Reddy of BJP is the corporator from RK Puram.

Besides holding the mayor’s post, the TRS also won the deputy mayoral election. The TRS’ corporator from Tarnaka division M. Srilatha Reddy was elected as the Deputy Mayor, defeating the BJP’s Shankar Yadav.

Election observer Sandeep Kumar Sultania monitored the proceedings of the mayoral elections.

There was a close fight between the TRS and the BJP over the mayor and deputy mayor post.

However, today’s mayoral elections went smoothly as the TRS was the largest party with the highest number of GHMC divisions (56) with the support of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul (AIMIM.)

The presiding GHMC officer Swetha Mohanty administered the oath of office to all the newly elected corporators.

The GHMC elections were held on the 1st of December 2020, whereas the previous GHMC committee ended its term on the 10th of February 2021.
