The Telugu State of Telangana ranked first in the country, for providing quality standard drinking water to the citizens.

The Bhagirathi Mission launched by the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Government, which aims for free drinking water to the residents of Telangana, is the reason behind the top ranking.  Not only this, the Bhagirathi Mission of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has become an inspiration to the Central Government, as they launched a similar Jal Jeevan Mission.

The top ranking by the Central Government was given after testing the water quality and if it is meeting the International Standard Organisation (ISO) guidelines.  The sample of water were collected from every Indian states, which was then tested.  Later, the Water Quality Information Report was submitted to the Rajya Sabha.  Accordingly, 61,78,426 samples were collected across the country and they were tested in two ways.

Out of that 11.29% samples were found to be contaminated. 88.71% are unpolluted.  The report concluded that there are more chemical contaminants than bacteriological contaminants in drinking water in the country.

However, it is a matter of pride that 99.953% of the black water in Telangana as a whole is found to be free of contaminants, making it top state in terms of drinking water quality.  After Telangana, West Bengal is the second top state, which provides quality standard drinking water, followed by Gujarat in the third position.
