In a major boost to the green environment initiative of the Telangana Government, the Telugu State has been ranked first in the Swachh Survekshan Grameen rankings.  The first position was given to Telangana in the Large States category under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-G,) announced on the 22nd of September, Thursday.

According to sources, Telangana secured 12 awards, with Nizamabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts being ranked first and second respectively in the Overall Top Districts category in the South Zone.  The Union Jal Shakthi Ministry’s National Jal Jeevan Mission under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) announced the rankings.

Mr. Vikas Sheel, the SBM G Mission Director wrote a letter to Chief Secretary Mr. Somesh Kumar, informing him about the award ceremony on the 2nd of October, marking the celebration of the Swachh Bharat Diwas in New Delhi.

Upon hearing that Telangana ranked first in the Swachh Survekshan Grameen rankings, Mr. E. Dayakar Rao, the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister said, “All the credit goes to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao.  I thank all the elected public representatives and officials, who extended their support in the effective implementation of the Palle Pragathi programme.”

It is to be noted, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government launched the Palle Pragathi programme, which is a major reason behind several awards instituted by the Centre in Swachh Bharat categories.  Furthermore, the TRS Government has been releasing Rs.227.50 crores every month as grants, for gram panchayats and villages, leading to various developmental activities like segregation of dry and wet waste, setting up of nurseries, manufacturing vermicompost through waste also.

In February this year, seven villages from the State were ranked among the top 10 villages under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) of the Union Ministry of Rural Development.

Later, 19 villages from Telangana bagged 19 national awards in the annual awards announced by the Union Ministry of Rural Development.
