The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has now become a hub for drug supply and transport in the Telugu State of Telangana.  According to the police, in less than two weeks, mostly cocaine and heroin worth over Rs. 100 crores have been seized.

On the 4th of May, Wednesday, the State Police registered a case and seized heroin worth nearly Rs. 12 crores and cocaine worth Rs. 80 crore was seized on the 1st of May.  In the last week of April, drugs worth Rs. 11 crores were seized in the State.

It is to be noted, all the suspects in the drug cases are African nationals, mostly Tanzanians.  In Wednesday’s matter, the Air Intelligence Unit, Hyderabad Customs intercepted a Tanzanian male passenger and seized 1,389.1 grams of heroin worth Rs 11.53 crore in the international grey market.  The customs officials said, “When enquired, he admitted that he had ingested capsules containing heroin.  He was then produced before a magistrate after which he was admitted to a hospital.  Under medical supervision, over a period of 6 days, he purged out 108 capsules containing heroin wrapped in adhesive transparent tape.”

Arrested on the 3rd of May, the Tanzanian suspect is currently under judicial custody with the Hyderabad Police. In the past one week, this is the second such case, where a Tanzanian entered the City with such amount of drugs, aiming to smuggle them into the Telugu State.

On the other hand, the State Government led by Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao and the Telangana Police are creating awareness and launching special campaigns regarding the rising drug cases in Hyderabad, Telangana.
