Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) cases are rising rapidly in Telangana. In the past 24 hours, the Telugu State reported 5 new Omicron cases.

According to the Telangana Health Department, on the 30th of December, 5 new cases, of which one was returnee from ‘at-risk’ countries, whereas others were from non-risk countries. With this, the tally of Omicron is at 67 in the State. Of the total 67 cases, 22 people recovered and have been discharged and the remaining are either quarantined or undergoing treatment at the Telangana Institute of Medical Science (TIMS.)

Besides, the State Health Department sent four new samples of random testing for genome sequencing, whereas reports of 20 samples are awaited from Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, Telangana also reported 280 new cases of COVID-19, taking the number of active cases to 3,563. In addition, 206 people were recovered and one death was reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 6,73,999 and 4,021, respectively.

Considering the rise in Omicron cases and COVID-19 cases, the Telangana Health Department alarmed a possible third wave in the next six months. Dr. G. Shrinivasa Rao, the Director of Public Health of Telangana, also urged people to stay cautious and follow COVID-19 protocols, especially when the Hyderabad people are set to celebrate New Years.
