In a tragic incident, a mob of villagers in Telangana’s Sangareddy district allegedly flogged a Dalit man to death.

The incident occurred on the early hours of the 26th of March, and was reported by the police on the 27th of March, Monday.  

As per the police, the Dalit Man identified as M Mallesh was beaten to death for stealing electric cables.  Police said the incident took place in an agriculture field in Gummadidala village when a group of villagers reportedly caught M Mallesh, 30, stealing wires connected to borewells. 

Ch Vijay Krishna, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gummadidala police said the investigation is underway and no arrests have been made yet.  He said, “We have registered an FIR invoking sections 342 ( wrongful confinement,) 302 (murder) and section 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe (ST) (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against unknown persons based on a complaint from the victim’s wife M Meena.”

Briefing about the incident, the police said, at about 1:00 A.M., on Sunday, they caught Mallesh and thrashed him.  He was taken to the local Rythu Sangham office, tied to a pole and thrashed, police said, adding that he died at around 6:00 A.M.

Seeking action against the murderers of her husband, Meena said Mallesh should have been handed over to the police if he had stolen the material. She has alleged that her husband was brutally beaten up and electrocuted. The police are awaiting the post-mortem report.
