The Telangana High Court, on the 18th of April, Monday, reviewed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) over the ex-gratia announced to farmers.  The Telangana HC division bench directed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government to expedite the process of compensation payment of Rs. 6 lakh each to the kin of deceased farmers in the Jayashankar-Bhupalapally district.  Notably, in 2015 the Telangana Government announced giving Rs. 6 lakh compensation to the families of farmers, who committed suicide due to crop damage in Telangana. Approximately 50 families lost their kin in 2015 and were eligible for the compensation money.

The PIL was filed by Mr. Bannuru Kondala Reddy, a social activist from Medak district, who sought a direction for the State Government to pay ex gratia to the kin of the deceased, who committed suicide due to crop failure under the leadership of Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana.

According to sources, the Telangana Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma led division bench directed the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Government to release the amount to the victim’s families. Earlier, in the previous hearing, the Court ordered the personal appearance of Principal Secretary, Revenue in the event of non-payment of ex gratia to the dependants. Ms. Vasudha Nagraj, the counsel for the petitioner, informed the Bench that through GO (Government Order) 173 dated September 22, 2015, the State Government had extended the ex gratia to 13 families in Vikarabad district, 23 families in Yadadri-Bhongir district, 4 families in Peddapalli district. However, only 12 families in the Jayashankar-Bhupalapally district are yet to get the ex gratia.

With the aforementioned development, the Telangana High Court adjourned the matter for after the summer vacation.
