The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leaders and workers called for a protest on the 4th of April, Monday.  The leaders staged demonstrations and held dharnas along with farmers in all the mandal headquarters, protesting against the Central Government over paddy procurement issue.

It is to be noted, recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government refused to purchase 100% paddy from the Telugu State, forcing the ruling TRS Government to do the same.  Reacting to this, Mr. K.T. Rama Rao, the Working President of the TRS called for the statewide protest.  Ministers, TRS Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs,) the Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) and party’s other elected representatives from village-level to district-level took part in agitation programmes demanding that the Centre procure paddy from Telangana in rabi.  The TRS called for a five-phase agitation programme, which starte from the 4th of April and would continue till the 11th of April.

The TRS leaders and cadre would hold ‘rasta rokos’ on all major national and state highways as part of the second phase of agitation on the 6th of April.

Addressing the dharnas, the ministers and TRS MLAs said though the BJP Government at the Centre made it clear that it would not procure paddy from Telangana in rabi, the BJP leaders in Telangana provoked farmers to sow paddy in rabi, promising that they would ensure that Centre procured paddy from Telangana.

As per sources, Telangana farmers had sown paddy in 35 lakh acres which reached the harvest stage in rabi season.
