Mr. Somesh Kumar, the Chief Secretary of Telangana, on the 11th of February, Friday, reviewed the arrangements of the Medaram Jatara, scheduled from the 16th of February.

Mr. Somesh Kumar held a review meeting with Mr. Mahender Reddy, the Director-General of Police (DGP,) endowment, medical and health, panchayat raj, Road Transport Corporation (RTC,) power and road and buildings and police department.  During the meeting, the Telangana CS directed the officials to take up all the measures in order to avoid inconvenience to the devotees.  They are also assured to abide by the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols.   This year, approximately one crore devotees are likely to attend the mega fair.

Mr. Somesh Kumar said the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) would release water into Jampanna lake for the devotees who take a holy dip in the water and offer prayers to Sammakka and Saralamma.  The CS further said that the State RTC would run  3,850 additional buses across the state to Medaram.  Nearly 21 lakh devotees are expected to use the bus services during the mela.

Mr. Somesh Kumar addressed the teleconference and said, “Along with the main hospital in Medaram, 35 medical camps have (sic) been set up and a total of 6,700 toilets have been set up in 327 areas in the Medaram premises.  Also, around 9,000 police personnel were deployed for bandobast and a special command control room was also set up.”

Meanwhile, the K. Chandrashekar Rao Government released Rs. 75 crores for the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara in Medaram.  The four-day Sammakka Saralamma jatara is a mega religious congregation of Adivasis, scheduled to be held at Medaram village in Telangana.  The event marks the fight of Sammakka and Saralamma, a duo of mother and daughter, who fought against the unjust law of the ruler Pratapudra of the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th century.

According to the history of Medaram Jatara, Prataparudra imposed taxes on the Koya Tribe and when they were unable to pay the taxes, Prataparudra called for war.  In the war Sammakka’s husband and the Koya tribal Chief died, following which she along with her daughter, Saralamma, entered the battleground.  However, after almost winning the war against the ruler, both, Sammakka and Saralamma died and the battleground where they died became the land to celebrate the festival.

The event has been declared as a State festival by the Telangana Government and celebrated every two years.  To celebrate the event, the State Government releases funds and organizes the event on a grand note.
