In Telangana’s Basar town, villagers and traders called for a bandh, on the 3rd of January, Tuesday.

According to sources, the bandh (shutdown) of the town was called in the view of a derogatory remark made by an atheist Bhairi Naresh, against the Hindu God Lord Ayyappa Swamy.

Recently, Bhairi Naresh, a leader of Bharatha Nasthika Sangham made a negative remark against the origin and birth of Lord Ayyappa Swamy, during a public meeting.  The comment was shared on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, gaining a lot of criticism from netizens.  In Telangana, many organisations like the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Bhagyanagar Ayyappa Seva Samiti, All India Ayyappa Seva Samiti staged a protest and demanded strict action against Bhairi Naresh.  In another First Information Report filed with the State Police, a woman demanded strict action and punishment for Bhairi, saying it has been a trend to disgrace Hindu gods, in the name of publicity.

Furthermore, Mr. Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also demanded action against Bhairi Naresh and slammed the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS.)  He tweeted, “Anybody can abuse Hindu Gods in Telangana and get exonerated because the state encourages blasphemy without taking any action! KCR claims to be True Hindu & his Hindutva is real BUT so far what action is taken on insults against Gods Vishnu, Shiva & Ayyappa done in Kodangal?”

On the 3rd of January, the villagers of Basar decided to hold a protest and called for a bandh, demanding the arrest of Bhairi Naresh.

In addition, protesters along with priests and temple workers staged a sit in on the road near the Gnana Saraswati Temple.   In addition, protestors blocked the Nizamabad-Bhainsa highway, leading to a heavy traffic jam in the region.  Shops, business establishments, offices and educational institutions remained closed on Tuesday, supporting the bandh.

Meanwhile, reacting to the protests and bandhs organised by Hindu Samithi, the K. Chandrashekar Rao led BRS Government assured strict action against anyone disrespecting Hindu Gods and religion and ordered an investigation.
