The Haryana and Punjab High Court announced the stay on the arrest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mr. Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga.

The court reviewed a petition filed by Mr. Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, who was arrested by the Punjab Police, on the 7th of May.  The judgement came as a major relief to the Delhi BJP leader, as his arrest has been stayed till the 5th of July.

The developments came three days after the court, holding an urgent hearing late on Saturday night, granted him protection from any coercive action till the next date of hearing.  The next date was scheduled for today, the 10th of May, on which the arrest stayed for more 25 days.

Notably, on the 6th of May, the BJP  leader was arrested by the Punjab Police.  He was arrested from his Delhi residence, following which tension prevailed in the region, as it involved the police from three different states, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.

According to sources, the arrest was made amid allegations of threatening the Delhi Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal.  Notably, a team of Punjab Police reached Mr. Tajinder Singh Bagga’s residence and detained him.

The BJP leaders condemned the arrest and said, the Arvind Kejriwal Government in Punjab is misusing its power and harassing the opposition leaders, by targeting them.  However, the Delhi Government denied such allegations and defended the arrest.  The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Government said, the Punjab police were acting in an unbiased way and the action was taken after Mr. Bagga refused to cooperate with the investigation even after notices were sent five times.   The BJP registered a complaint with the Delhi Police and accused the Punjab Police of kidnapping the BJP leader.

The matter created political tension in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.
