On the 5th of July, K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, held a review meeting over irrigation and water related issues.

The meeting was held with the officials of the irrigation department concerned with the irrigation and water issues in the combined Karimnagar and Sircilla Assembly. The meeting was held after KCR visited Rajanna Sircilla district and launched several development projects.

During the meeting, KCR said, Siricilla district has become the main centre for water in Telangana, especially after the construction of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. The giant project was launched on the 21st of June 2019, on Godavari River in Kaleshwaram, Telangana. The project, which cost Rs. 80,000 crores, has been designed for providing water for irrigation and drinking purposes and to get rid of water scarcity issues in many districts in Telangana.

Speaking of the Kaleshwaram Project construction KCR said, “To divert (the) Godavari River waters to Telangana cultivated lands, projects constructed based on Pranahita like Kaleshwaram project, reservoirs are giving good results. With many difficulties, irrigation water was lifted and made Telangana a fertile soil. There is a need to utilize to the optimal level Godavari River waters not only from Pranahitha but also from upper Yellampalli where the water is available.”

Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao further said, “At the time of famine, the importance of the Kaleshwaram project will be understood. We have constructed the Kaleshwaram project to overcome the famine conditions. We have made arrangements so that water is available in abundance in any season including the famine conditions. Now we have water available in our hands. How we utilize the water depends on our intelligence.”

Mr. Rao said, after the irrigation project development of Kaleshwaram, there should not be any water problem in regions like Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam. He said, these districts are situated within the basins of the Godavari river, hence should not face any water related problems. Therefore, using the water of Godavari River through reservoirs and lift irrigation projects should be implemented and the water related issue of Karimnagar would be solved.

The meeting was attended by K.T. Rama Rao, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister of Telangana, the Telangana Road and Building Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy and the State Planning Board Vice Chairman B. Vinod Kumar.
