On the evening of the 24th of September, several parts of Hyderabad witnessed heavy rainfall, the third highest ever recorded in a day during September in the past 111 years.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD,) heavy rains are expected to continue till the 26th of September in Warangal and Mulugu districts.
The heavy rainfall in the City created chaos and traffic jams for daily commuters, bringing normal life to a halt.
Passengers travelling by RTC buses and other transport were stranded during peak office hours due to traffic. In many areas, trees fell down on the streets, blocking the way.
However, the Hyderabad Traffic Police are trying to control the heavy traffic and make it easier for commuters. The Traffic Police also advised the employees of Information Technology (IT) companies to delay their departure to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) also started clearing the bottlenecks in water drains to avoid water logging on roads.
G. Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India, met S.K. Joshi, the Chief Secretary of Telangana and the GHMC Commissioner and received updates about the current situation in Telangana.
As per the IMD data, Hyderabad witnessed 7.5 cm rainfall on the 24th of September. In 111 years, this was the third highest rainfall in the City in one day during September. In 1908, Hyderabad witnessed 15.32 cm rainfall, the highest ever received in the City in a day, whereas the second highest rainfall was 9 cm, recorded in 2017.
