On the occasion of Sankranthi, more than 50 lakh people returned to their hometowns and villages for the celebrations. This was evident from the heavy rush at the bus depots and railway stations from the last two days. Most of the organizations and educational institutions declared a holiday on the occasion of Bhogi, Sankranthi on Friday and Saturday and Kanuma on Sunday.

Hyderabad has people from all over the country. But mostly people of the Telugu regions are settled here, hence the rush to return to hometowns. The TSRTC and APSRTC have arranged special buses to cope up with the heavy rush in the city. Even with the extra facilities, they are falling short because of the unprecedented rush.

The city has been experiencing heavy traffic jams at the toll plazas and vehicular movement has slowed down by hours resulting in heated arguments and fights. Police had to be placed at the toll plazas around the city to control the vehicular movement.
