The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections is underway on the 1st of December. 

The voting for 150 divisions of the GHMC started at 7:00 A.M.

Many political leaders, actors and citizens of GHMC limits casted their votes.

G. Kishan Reddy, the Home Affairs Minister of Telangana, casted his votes in early hours of voting. Tollywood actor Chiranjeevi casted his vote.

Other leaders like Asaddudin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) casted his vote and K.T. Rama Rao, the Working President of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) casted his vote.

Nearly 74,67,256 voters including 38, 89,637 men, 35,76,941 women and 678 others would decide the fate of 1,122 candidates in fray.

To assure high voter’s turnout, the Federation Residential Welfare Associations (UFERWS) set up help desks near polling stations. These help desks would guide voters who arrive without voter chits/slips and ensure to utilise the right of vote in the polling station.

In addition, concerned for the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 situation, the Telangana Health authorities reiterated that COVID-19 patients and people with symptoms should not visit polling booths. For senior citizens and employees, voting was organised through postal ballot, for which the person need not to come to the polling station to cast votes.

The major parties contesting for today’s elections are the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) (150 candidates,) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) (149,) the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (51) and Indian National Congress (INC) 146 candidates.

To maintain decorum and ensure peaceful voting, 36,404 personnel were deployed at 9,101 polling stations.

The polling would continue till 5:00 P.M., and the counting of votes would be held on the 4th of December.
