Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has brought laurels to India after winning a silver medal at the World Championship.

On the 7th of December, Wednesday, Mirabai Chanu, despite her wrist injury secured a silver medal for weightlifting of 200 kgs. She lifted 87 kg in the first snatch and in clean, she lifted 113 kg.  It is to be noted, during her training, Weightlifter Chanu received a serious wrist injury.  However, due to the upcoming events, including National Games in October, she could not focus on her recovery.

Mirabai Chanu’s coach Vijay Sharma who expressed happiness over the Silver Medal win, said, “We were not taking any pressure for this event. This is the weight Mira lifts regularly. From now we will start increasing the weights and improving.”  He further said, “We couldn’t do much (about the injury) because we didn’t want to skip the World Championships.  Now, we will focus on her wrist because we have a lot of time before the next event.”

Notably, this is Mirabai Chanu’s second World Championship medal, as in 2017 Chanu secured a Gold Medal at the World Championship.

Meanwhile, China’s Jiang Huihua secured the Gold Medal at the World Championship 2022, which is the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics.  Jiang Huihua won the first position, a Gold Medal with a lift of 206 kgs, 93 kgs in snatch and in clean lifted 113 kgs.   In addition,  Tokyo’s Hou Zhihua, a Tokyo Olympic Champion secured a Bronze Medal at the event, held in Colombia.
