Prithvi Shaw Banned By BCCI For ADRV

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI,) on the 30th of July, took action against Prithvi Shaw, a player of the Indian Cricket Team, for an Anti Doping Rule Violation (ADRV.)

Prithvi Shaw is banned from playing cricket for eight months, as he failed a doping test because he allegedly took terbutaline, a banned drug.

As per the International Anti Doping Agency regulations, terbutaline, which is commonly used for cough, is banned for athletes.

According to the BCCI, terbutaline was found in the urine sample of Prithvi post an anti doping test conducted during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T-20 Tournament, which was held in February 2019.

The BCCI released a statement, “Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In and Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances.” It further read, “Prithvi Shaw registered with Mumbai Cricket Association, has been suspended for doping violation.”

The anti doping test’s results were revealed on the 16th of July. However, Shaw explained his reason, which was satisfying for the BCCI, following which, they imposed the eight month ban.

The BCCI also backdated the suspension and said the suspension already started from the 16th of March 2019.

Explaining the reason for backdating the suspension, the BCCI said as Shaw explained his reason of why terbutaline was found and admitted his ADRV, the BCCI decided to start his suspension from the date the sample was received, which was the 22nd of February.

The BCCI said Shaw already served 5 months of suspension and can start his practice from the 15th of September.

Prithvi Shaw’s suspension ends on the 15th of November 2019.
