According to sources, Pelé was a global icon in the world of soccer and was suffering from a respiratory infection.  He was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, in November and was undergoing treatment.  Getting into the details, Pelé was infected with a respiratory infection due to complications related to colon cancer.  After days of treatment, the doctors at the hospital said Pelé’s health condition worsened and his cancer also progressed, making his treatment complicated.  Pelé died on Thursday due to multiple organ failure, said hospital sources.

The news of Pelé’s demise was confirmed by his daughter Kely Nascimento.  She wrote an Instagram post for her father, which read, “Everything that we are, is thanks to you.  We love you infinitely.  Rest in peace.”

Upon hearing the news of Pelé’s demise, the soccer fraternity and other sports person extended grief and shared condolences on Twitter.

Pelé’s first club, Santos FC, responded to the news on Twitter with the words “eternal” shared next to an image of a crown.

Brazilian footballer Neymar said Pelé “changed everything.” In a post on Instagram, he wrote: “He turned football into art, into entertainment. He gave a voice to the poor, to black people and especially:  He gave visibility to Brazil. Football and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the King!” 

Meanwhile, highlighting his soccer career, Pelé was in the field of soccer for more than 60 years, making his name synonymous with soccer.  He played in four World Cups and is the only player in history to win three, but his legacy stretched far beyond his trophy haul and remarkable goal-scoring record.
