On the 5th of October, the Uttar Pradesh Government decided to distribute tablets and smartphones to youths for free.

The decision to distribute free tablets and smartphones was taken by Mr. Yogi Adityanath led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government during a Cabinet meeting. On Tuesday evening, the State Government held a Cabinet meeting, following which the statement was released.

The youths of urban and rural areas, enrolled in various teaching/training programmes like graduation, post graduation, diploma, skills development, paramedical, nursing and others would get the tablets and smartphones. The Uttar Pradesh Government said the distribution is to strengthen technology development and empower the youths of rural areas.

In regard to this, the Yogi Adityanath Government is going to release Rs. 3,000 crores.

An official statement regarding the same was released. The statement read, “During the pandemic, various educational institutions continued with their educational activities through online means. The inevitable need of digital empowerment of students and the youth had been felt at every level. Digital mediums are also being used more and more for the youth to apply in various government and non-government jobs, get coaching/training for them or apply in any other employment.”

Although the U.P., Government said the decision was unique to empower the youth of the State in terms of technology, a similar scheme was adopted under the leadership of the previous government in Uttar Pradesh.

n addition, the decision came at a time when the State Government is preparing for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The U.P. Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in 2022.
