In Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur, a tragic incident was reported on the 14th of September, which triggered panic and anger amongst the villagers.

Two minor girls, who were sisters and belonged to the Scheduled Caste were found hanging from a tree.   According to the victim’s mother, the girls were allegedly raped and murdered.  Addressing the media, the girls’ mother said, “They were abducted by men on motorcycles.”

A local police said, “The site is being inspected by senior officers of the district.  On information, the Nighasan police reached the spot immediately and action is being taken to send the dead bodies for post-mortem examination as per rules.  Legal action will be taken based on the investigation of the case.”

The villagers and the family lodged a complaint against the accused, following which the Uttar Pradesh Polic arrested four people, who are currently under the police custody.  Furthermore, a large police force has been deployed in the region, as the villagers staged a march and protest, demanding justice for the minor girls of the Dalit Community.

Laxman Singh, the Inspector General of Police, Lucknow Range, said, “The girls were found hanging by their own dupattas.  There were no apparent injuries on the body.”  He further added, “We will file an FIR based on whatever the family tells us in their complaint.”

Meanwhile, the incident gained a lot of criticism and dig against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government led by Yogi Adityanath.

Akhilesh Yadav, the  Samajwadi Party President has criticised the Uttar Pradesh Government and attacked Chief Minister Mr. Yogi Adityanath over women’s safety in the state.  He said, “In Yogi government, goons are harassing mothers and sisters every day, very shameful.  The government should get the matter investigated, the culprits should get the harshest punishment.”

In the past few months, many cases of sexual assault, rape and kidnapping have been reported in Uttar Pradesh, especially against Scheduled Caste women and girls.

Furthermore, the police have launched an investigation into the Lakhimpur incident and arrested four accused.

This is a developing story, further details are awaited.
