The Ministry of Home Affairs, on the 24th of April, allowed all the neighbourhood, residential and complex grocery shops to open amid the lockdown.

The spokesperson of MHA, took to Twitter and announced, “#COVID19 updateAll registered shops regd under the Shops & Establishment Act of respective States/ UTs, including shops in residential complexes, neighborhood & standalone shops exempted from #lockdown restrictions.  Prohibited: Shops in single & multi brand  malls.”

The Union Home Ministry issued a release for the same on the night of the 24th of April.  The orders came into effect from the midnight of the 25th of April.

However, the shops which would open have to follow all the norms of  the lockdown and social distancing.  Face masks, hand sanitizers and gloves would be mandatory for everyone working in the shops.

The order read, “Market complexes, except those within the limits of municipal corporations and municipalities, are allowed to open.”

Besides, in rural and semi rural areas, salons, tailor shops and barber shops could open if they are standalone shops or residential shops, but not if in a market complex.

This announcement is said to be a big relief for the shops which were shut since the 24th of March, when the nation wide lockdown was announced for the first time.

The shops which would still remain close are:

  • Liquor shops
  • Shops outside the limit of municipalities and municipal corporations
  • Shops in containment zones and hotspot areas
  • Multi or single brand shops/malls
  • Grocery shops in multi brand or single brand shopping malls.

Meanwhile, India reported a total of 18,668 active cases, 5,062 recovered cases and 775 death cases of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19.

While Tripura, Goa and Manipur are declared to be COVID-19 infection free states, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are a few states with more than 1,500 cases of COVID-19.
