On the 22nd of February, the Indian Government started the first of the three Air India’s special ferry flights to bring back Indians in Ukraine.

The decision was taken in view of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia crisis. The three flights took off from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi at 7:36 A.M. Of the three special flights, one Dreamliner B-787 aircraft has been deployed for the special operation. The flight has a capacity of over 200 seats and would land in Delhi from Ukraine with Indian returnees tonight, the 22nd of February.

The other two flights are scheduled to return to India on the 24th of February and the 26th of February. Booking is open through Air India booking offices, website, call centre and authorised travel agents.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Ukraine also advised students and people of India, to temporarily leave Ukraine, due to recent tensions over the Russia-Ukraine border matter. Recently, the Russian and Ukraine region witnessed explosions on each side, blaming the other for the attack.

Concerned about the situation, the Indian Ambassador (permanent representative of India) to the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) said, “Safety and security of civilians is essential. More than 20,000 Indian students and nationals live and study in different parts of Ukraine, including in its border areas. The well-being of Indians is of priority to us.”

It is to be noted, Russian troops have been increasing at the Ukraine border for a month and despite warnings of war from the United States of America (U.S.A.,) the situation is getting worse with the possibility of a war in Ukraine. The major reason behind the situation is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) which has members as the U.S.A., the United Kingdom (U.K.,) and 26 other countries. Ukraine wants to be a member of NATO, which has been supported by the U.S.A., the U.K., France and others . The Russian Government does not want Ukraine to be a part of NATO, as it will expand the grouping at the Ukraine-Russia border. Another major reason is Crimea, as Russia believes if Ukraine becomes a NATO member, it would try to take back Crimea by military force.
