The Tamil Nadu Government, on the 9th of May, opposed the amendments in the Electricity Act, 2003.

K.Palaniswami, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu said the proposed amendments would take away the power of the State Government in the functioning of the power houses of the State.

On the 8th of May, the Central Government proposed to set up Electricity Contract Enforcement Authority (ECEA,) as an amendment to the 2003 Electricity Act.  The  new authority would handle specific performance of contracts related to purchase, sale or transmission of electricity, and would help with the sanctity of power supply contracts in states.

In regard to this new amendment, K. Palaniswami urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevail upon the Ministry of Power to re consider the Act and discuss the same with the state governments.  He said until the pandemic situation is not under control the new amendments should be kept on hold and should be discussed thoroughly with the state governments.

K. Palaniswami wrote a letter to Mr. Modi and mentioned his suggestion regarding the new changes Electricity Amendment Bill 2020.

This is not the first time, K. Palaniswami opposed the changes in the Electricity Act, 2003. In 2018, the Tamil Nadu Chief minister wrote a letter and opposed the amendments.
