The Supreme Court granted bail to Mr. Varavara Rao, a Telugu poet and activist who is charged in the Elgar Parishad Bhima Koregaon Case.

On the 10th of August, Wednesday, the Top Court approved Mr. Varavara Rao’s bail plea on medical grounds.  According to sources, he has been given six-month medical bail by the Supreme Court.

While hearing the bail plea of Mr. Varavara Rao, 82 year old, the Supreme Court said,  “The appellant shall not misuse his liberty and not get in touch with any of the co accused or try to influence the course of the investigation.”   The Apex Court bench led by the Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit, comprising  Justices Aniruddha Bose and Sudhanshu Dhulia made it clear that the benefit of bail is extended to Rao only on his medical condition and any observations made in the order shall not be taken to be a reflection on merits or rival contentions advanced by the parties.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) was investigating the matter and held Mr. Varavara Rao, a prime accused in the Maoist link case. 

Meanwhile, Mr. Rao is currently undergoing treatment in the Mumbai based Nanavati Hospital.  He was in the Mumbai Police custody since the 28th of August 2018, but due to his health conditions, he was admitted to the hospital, many times in the past.
