Indian National Congress President Sonia Gandhi will not appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 8, confirmed the Indian National Congress sources.

Notably, the ED issued a summon to Gandhi in a 2012 National Herald Newspaper, money laundering case for interrogation. However, recently, Sonia Gandhi tested positive for Covid-19, which is likely to be the reason, that she will not appear before the ED. Besides Sonia, Rahul Gandhi has also been summoned.

Notably, the ED registered a case against the Gandhis, alleging a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper.  In 2012, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) advocate Subramanian Swamy filed a case, claiming that Young Indian Limited (YIL) took over the assets of the defunct print media outlet Associated Journals Limited (AJL) in a “malicious” manner to gain profit and assets worth over Rs. 2,000 crore.  As per the registered case, the YIL took a loan of Rs. 50 lakh from the ALJ for starting a newspaper, which was illegal, and then took over the press outlet, National Herald, the English Newspaper of AJL.

However, recently the ED reopened the case and questioned INC leader Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge.  The ED summoned Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Ms. Sonia Gandhi on the 8th of June.

Concerned about Ms. Sonia Gandhi’s appearing before the ED,  Randeep Surjewala said he hoped the Congress chief would recover in the next few days and again get herself tested before her ED summons.

However, on the 2nd of June, Thursday, Mr. Randeep Surjewala, the Spokesperson of the INC, said, “Congress president had developed mild fever and COVID symptoms last evening.  On testing, she is COVID positive.”  In another tweet, Mr. Randeep Surjewala said, “As a large number of Congressmen and women and well-wishers have expressed concern, we want to say that she is fine and recovering.  We thank everyone for their good wishes.”  This could be a reason that Ms. Sonia Gandhi would not appear before the ED.
