Mr. Buta Singh, senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) and former Union Minister, passed away. 

Buta Singh, 86 years old passed away on the 2nd of January at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS.) He was in a coma since 2019 and died of brain hemorrhage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and extended his condolences to the senior leader’s family.

Mr. Modi took to Twitter and said, “Shri Buta Singh Ji was an experienced administrator and effective voice for the welfare of the poor as well as downtrodden. Saddened by his passing away. My condolences to his family and supporters.”

Rahul Gandhi, the Indian National Congress (INC) too expressed grief over Buta Singh’s death and said that the Nation has lost a loyal public servant today.

Buta Singh joined politics as a leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and fought his first election. Later, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in the 1960s. He was first elected to the 3rd Lok Sabha in 1962, from the Sadhna constituency.

Buta Singh held many positions including Union Home Minister and Union Agriculture Minister. He was also the Chairperson of the National Commission For Schedule Cast from 2007 to 2010.
