The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 18th of October, ordered the transfer of Prateek Hajela, the coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in Assam.

Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) asked the Government of India (GoI) to immediately transfer Prateek Hajela to Madhya Pradesh.  CJI Gogoi said Hajela would be on deputation, without specifying the reason for the transfer.

Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, representing the GoI, asked if there was a reason for the transfer, to which the CJI responded, “No order will be without a reason.”  The reason is yet to be specified.

According to CNNNews18, the reason for the immediate transfer is said to be a threat to Hajela’s life.  The source also suggested Prateek Hajela submitted a confidential report to the SC, seeking a transfer from Assam.

However, an official announcement regarding the reason is yet to be made.

The Supreme Court asked the Central Government to issue the transfer order within 7 days from the 18th of October.
