On the 27th of September, the Supreme Court (SC,) heard a petition filed against the last minute changes in the syllabus for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Post Graduate (PG) Super Speciality (SS) Exam 2021.

It is to be noted, recently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Board of Examination (NBE) made changes in the NEET PG syllabus. The last minute changes left many students in shock, as the exams for the NEET PG Super Speciality is on the 13th of November 2021. The notification for the exam was released in July, whereas notification regarding the change in pattern was released in August.

In regard to this Prateek Rastogi and 40 other PGs filed a petition in the Supreme Court. The petition was heard on the 27th of September, Monday by a bench of SC judges composed of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice B.V. Nagarathna.

During the Court hearing, the bench lashed out at the NMC and NBE. The bench questioned, “Why has the notice been issued? Students start preparing for super specialty courses months and months in advance.” They further lashed out at the authorities and said, “What is the need to change before the exam? Why can you not proceed with the changes from the following year? Doctors cannot be left at the mercy of insensitive bureaucrats.”

Fuming at the NMC and the NBE, the bench said, “Don’t treat these young doctors as footballs in the game of power. Hold the meeting and put your house on order.”

Responding to the Court, the NBE’s counsel submitted changes that were in contemplation for some time, and they were enforced after obtaining the necessary approvals, and sought to file a reply in the matter. Hearing the argument of the counsel of NBE and the NME, the Court said, “This is so important for their career..cannot introduce changes last minute.”

The bench also warned to issue “strictures” if authorities fail to find a solution after the meeting with the Union Health Ministry. The court said, “Please be open to strictures of the Supreme Court if we are not agreeing with you.”

With this, the Supreme Court adjourned the matter to next week.
