On the 3rd of February, the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed a plea demanding a committee to conduct a time bound probe into the 26th January’s tractor rally violence.

During the 72nd Republic Day celebrations, the protesting farmers called for a tractor rally. During the rally, violence broke out injuring 390 police officials and killing 1 person.

The plea was reviewed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) S.A. Bobde. He asked lawyer Vishal Tiwari, who had filed the PIL, to give a representation to the Central Government for taking necessary action.

The petition filed by Mr. Tiwari also sought directions to the concerned authority to lodge FIRs against individuals or organisations responsible for the violence and brought dishonour to the national flag on the 26th of January.

Apart from Vishal Tiwari, Swati Goel Sharma and Sanjeev Nevar also filed petitions demanding a probe in the incident by the National Investigative Agency (NIA.)

The SC bench comprising Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasubramanian said, “We are sure that the Government is inquiring into it (violence) and they are doing it. We have read statements made by the Prime Minister in the press that the law will take its own course. That means they are inquiring into it. We do not want to interfere in it at this stage.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Tiwari sought setting up of a commission headed by a retired Judge of the Top Court to inquire into the incident.

In addition to this, the Apex Court also refused to entertain two similar pleas related to the tractor rally violence.

They even asked the petitioners to file representation with the Central Government.
