In a major drawback for the Indian National Congress (INC,) a special metropolitan court of magistrate issued summon to three senior leaders of the party.
On the 14th of June, Wednesday, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the former Member of Parliament (MP) of Wayanad, Mr. Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka and Mr. D.K. Shivakumar, the Deputy CM of Karnataka, has been issued summons in a defamation case. Notably, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed a defamation case against the three INC leaders, for their 40% corruption remark during the Karnataka Assembly elections campaign.
Notably, during the election campaigns in Karnataka, the INC leaders said, “The incumbent BJP government indulged in “40 per cent corruption” and had looted Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the previous four years was “baseless, prejudiced and defamatory.”
In addition, a similar claim was published in a renowned newspaper in Karnataka, ahead of the elections. Reacting to the claims, the BJP Secretary Mr. Keshavprasad filed a complaint.
It is to be noted, this is the second defamation case registered against Rahul Gandhi. Recently, the INC leader and former MP of Wayanad was convicted in the 2019 Defamation Case, registered by a BJP leader from Gujarat over the “Modi Surname” row.
The matter is still pending with the Supreme Court, as after being convicted by a Gujarat Court, the INC challenged the conviction in the Top Court.
