Today, the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is likely to be declared the new President of the 47 year old party. But Mr. Gandhi will take over the Congress Party on the 16th of December.

The day will mark a generation shift when the longest serving Congress President Sonia Gandhi hands over the Party responsibility to her son.

Today is the last date of withdrawal of nomination for the elections for the Congress President. Surprisingly the announcement will be made today as Gandhi is the only candidate.

Rahul Gandhi received a total of 89 nominations in his favor. Rahul Gandhi was named by Sonai Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, Sheila Dikshit and Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanaswamy. The Party Leaders who nominated Rahul Gandhi were Manmohan Singh, P. Chidambaram, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Anand Sharma and Oscar Fernandes among others.
