The Uttar Pradesh Police detained Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Priyanka Gandhi, the General Secretary In Charge of Uttar Pradesh INC.

According to sources, Mr. Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi set off on foot to meet with the family of Hathras gangrape victim, who died on the 29th of September.

However, the Uttar Pradesh Police stopped them at Yamuna Expressway, citing imposition of Section 144, which prohibits assembly of four or more people.

Responding to the situation of Section 144, Rahul Gandhi asked the cop to allow him to go alone. He said, “I am standing here peacefully. I want to march alone to Hathras. Section 144 talks about public assembly. I will go alone to Hathras. On what basis are you detaining me.”

Mr. Gandhi even alleged the Uttar Pradesh Police of manhandling him and pushing him on to the ground

On the 14th of September, a 19 year old Dalit girl was brutally gang raped by four upper class men.

The incident took place in a village of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. The rape victim died on the 29th of September at Safdarajang Hospital, Delhi.

The incident drew criticism against the UP Government and Delhi Police, after the victim’s body was cremated by police at 3:00 A.M., on the 30th of September. The police without the permission of the victim’s family cremated her body.

Her family alleged the police did not allow them to take the body of the girl and locked them up, when they demanded for the return of her remains.

A video taken by one of the farmers at the spot shows Mr. Gandhi being held back by the policemen.

Meanwhile, the Hathras District Administration announced an ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakhs to the victim’s family.
