Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, on the 2nd of September, Friday, commissioned India’s first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

The commissioned event of INS Vikrant into the Indian Navy, boosting the maritime security was held at the Cochin Shipyard Limited, in Kochin, Kerala.  The historic maritime commission put India into a select league of countries with domestic capability to build such large war ships, built at a cost of Rs. 20,000 crores.

PM Modi unveiled a plaque to mark the induction of INS Vikrant, named after its predecessor that played a crucial role in the 1971 India Pakistan war, into the Navy. The carrier is equipped with state of the art features.

During the event, Mr. Narendra Modi said, “INS Vikrant is a floating airfield, a floating town and the power generated in it can light up 5,000 houses, while the cables can run from Kashi to Kochi.  INS Vikrant will also use the power of our Nari Shakti.  The way there is no limitation to the sea, there will be no restriction to our women too.”

Furthermore, during the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also unveiled the new Naval Ensign (Nishaan), doing away with the colonial past.  The new insignia represents the rich Indian maritime heritage, enhancing the Indian Navy and making the nation’s defence sector self reliant.

The strong 262 metres long ship, INS Vikrant has over 2,300 compartments for a crew of 1,700 people.
