On the 24th of June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to chair a meeting with Kashmiri leaders regarding the Jammu and Kashmir matter.

All the political parties leaders of the Union Territory, Jammu and Kashmir flew to Delhi, where the meeting would be held. The leaders who headed to Delhi from Jammu and Kashmir include the former chief ministers of the UT, Farooq Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. Besides the former CMs, approximately 14 leaders from regional parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC,) were invited for the meeting. In addition, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress (INC) leaders would also attend the meeting. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and home secretary would also attend the meeting.

During the meeting, the Kashmiri leaders and the Government of India (GoI) would discuss the future course of action for the UT. The meeting scheduled today, Thursday, would be the first political meeting between the Central Government and Jammu and Kashmir leaders after the GoI abrogated Article 370 and revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Later, under the new arrangements, the Central Government bifurcated the erstwhile State into two UTs, one is Jammu and Kashmir, with a legislative assembly and the second one is Ladakh, without a legislative assembly.

According to sources, key issues like delimitation and assembly elections, a blueprint to begin the political process in the UT and other issues would be discussed in today’s meeting.

Ahead of the meeting, the PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti said, “The agenda of the alliance, for which this alliance has been formed, what has been snatched away from us, we will talk on that, that it was a mistake and it was illegal and unconstitutional, without restoring which the issue of J-K (cannot be resolved) and the situation in J-K (cannot improve) and peace in the whole region cannot be restored.”

The CPM leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, who is also a spokesman for the six party People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD,) said, “We have not been given an agenda. We will be attending the meeting to know what the Centre is offering.” The PAGD was formed with the aim of striving to restore Jammu and Kashmir to its position as it existed before Article 370 was revoked on August 5, 2019.

In addition, the leaders from Jammu and Kashmir are likely to insist on getting statehood and special status back for Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on the 23rd of June, issued an alert in the region following a series of attacks. The police issued a warning stating that the “anti national” elements may attempt to “hit soft targets to create a hype” and affect the peace in the UT. Soldiers posted at the areas along the Line of Control (LoC) have also been on alert.

Today’s meeting on the Jammu and Kashmir issue is likely to begin at 3:00 P.M.
