Vinay Sharma, a convict of 2018 Nirbhaya rape and murder case, on the 9th of March, filed mercy plea before Anil Bijal, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

In his mercy plea, Vinay Sharma asked for life imprisonment instead of death sentence.

On the 16th of December, six men identified as Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Jai Singh, Sonu and Akshay singh brutally gangraped a 23 year old medical student and tried to kill her.

In 2013, Jai Singh committed suicide in Tihar Jail, whereas, Sonu who was a minor was released after being in juvenile for 3 years.   Remaining 4 convicts were announced sentence to death in 2017.

Though the Delhi Court announced death sentence in 2017, due to several legal rights, four convicts were able to delay the death execution.  Recently, in 2019 the Delhi High Court announced the death execution thrice, the 31st of January, the 1st of February and the 4th of March, but due to legal rights used by the convicts, it was postponed.

Now once again, the four convicts were announced to be hanged on the 20th of March at 5:30 A.M.
