On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected the plea of making cow slaughter illegal nationwide. The Apex court said that it was each state’s decision to implement the law or not. They said “One state may ban slaughter, the other may not. We will not interfere in state laws.”

Vineet Saha put a petition in the court seeking a nationwide ban on the cow slaughter. He stated that cattle smuggling has been on the increase from the states where cow slaughter is banned to those states where it is permitted. The SC issued that it has already passed orders in a step to decrease illegal smuggling of cattle in between the states.

In July 2016, Himachal Pradesh High Court directed the Centre to pass a law that prohibits cow slaughter. Last week the SC passed a stay order on this judgment until further notice. This topic has always been controversial in our Country for many years, Right-wing groups have time and again called for a total ban cow slaughter across the country. Most of the states have implemented various kinds of bans and restrictions on cow slaughter.

Very few states like Kerala, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim have not issued any kind of ban on cow slaughter. In all other states, there is either a blanket ban or some kind of restriction on the slaughter.
