On the 8th of December, Wednesday, Mr. Mukesh Ambani, the Managing Director (MD) of the Reliance International Limited (RIL,) emphasized on 5g roll out.

Addressing the Indian Mobile Congress event, Mr. Mukesh Ambani said, “Roll out of 5g in India should be a national priority.” Aiming the digital revolution in India, Ambani emphasized on the need of 5g, executed by telecom army, Jio.

In regard to this, the RIL MD highlighted a major reason of affordability, which at a certain point is a hurdle to 5g roll out across India.

He said, the issue, not just affordability of services, but devices is a huge crisis being faced in India. A majority of people in India are using basic features devices, which support 2g ,3g services. He asked the Center to use Universal Services Obligation (USO) funds for subsidized devices to eligible people.  It is to be noted, nearly 5% of the license fee paid by telecom operators goes to the USO Fund.  By 2027, 39% mobile subscriptions will have 5g technology.

Mr. Mukesh Ambani said, “When we talk of affordability in the policy context, we only think of affordability of services. Actually, India needs to ensure affordability not only of services, but also of devices and applications.”  Mr. Mukesh Ambani concluded his speech, “If all the players in the industry work together, we can rapidly achieve a nationwide footprint of fibre, just as we reached mobile telephony to every corner of the country in the last decade.”

Meanwhile, according to latest data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio has more than 44.38 crore subscribers.  In addition, as per report, 5g technology would represent 39 % of the total mobile subscription in India by 2027.
