Meet Bangalore-based marathon runner Kanishka Lahiri who runs with one lung! Quite amazing that a man whose right lung had to be removed completely because of cancer not only runs marathons and ultra marathons but also treks in the Himalayas. In 2013 Kanishka visited the doctor after developing a dry cough due to the Bangalore weather and pollution. Initially, he ignored it but later when it became severe Kanishka decided to visit a physician.

After three months of treatment, Kanishka had an X-Ray done and it became clear that he had a patch on the right lung that turned out to be cancer. He had his right lung removed completely. Postoperative biopsies on the lung tissue confirmed Hodgkin’s lymphoma, stage 4A. Kanishka had to undergo chemotherapy to save his left lung after it started showing signs of damage. Though sorrows may last for the night, joy comes in the morning! Kanishka started recovering and learned to live with one lung. Soon he regained the strength he had lost.mango-news-jpg-1-1

Kanishka said, “Medical science played a great part in my recovery but what helped much more was the positive attitude that my family and friends brought to me. My doctor said that I would not just recover but be able to run as well. And I wanted to believe in it and make it happen.”

Now Kanishka is living life like one of us. He runs marathons and also treks in the Himalayas.Isn’t it just amazing?
