After winning the Bhawanipore by election, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, announced the names of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) candidates for 4 Assembly constituencies.

On the 3rd of October, Ms. Banerjee said, “On this auspicious day, I would like to announce the names of my candidates who will contest the bypolls. Our party leader Udayan Guha will contest from (the) Dinhata seat. Sovandeb Chattopadhyay will contest from Khardaha (in North 24 Parganas). Brajakishore Goswami will contest from (the) Santipur seat.”

Mr. Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, who was the MLA of Bhwanipore Assembly constituency, resigned from the post to make space for Ms. Mamata Banerjee. According to Article 164(4) of the Constitution of India, a minister who is not a member of the Legislature of the State for a period of six consecutive months cannot be the chief minister. Now, he has been named MLA candidate for the Khardaha Assembly constituency.

In addition, Mr. Subrata Mondal was announced as the MLA candidate for Gosaba constituency in South 24 Parganas district. The Assembly by poll for the four constituencies would be held on the 30th of October and the results for the same would be announced on the 2nd of November.

It is to be noted, the MLA seat of Dinhata and Santipur fell vacant after their MLAs resigned from the post. The MLA positions of Khardaha and Gosaba fell vacant after the demise of their respective MLAs.
