On the 22nd of April, Friday, the Karnataka Police imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in Hubli City.  The section, which restricts the gathering of more than 4 people has been imposed in the view of the recent clash outside the Hubli Police Station.

It is to be noted, that on the 16th of April, in Karnataka’s Hubli region, a violent clash broke out over a social media post, showcasing objectionable remarks against the Muslim community.  Although the accused was arrested, a group of people expressed dissatisfaction over the action taken, staged a protest outside the police, and started pelting stones.  In the clash, four police personnel received injuries, following which 12 different cases were registered and approximately 134 people were arrested.

Addressing the media, the Hubballi Dharwad Police Commissioner Mr. Labhu Ram said, “The main case was registered in connection with April 16 night (stone-pelting) incident, while in connection with law and order situation, we have registered 12 cases in which 134 arrests have been made.  Section 144 to continue till Saturday morning in South Sub-Division 5 PS limit.”  He further added, “One student Abhishek who is in judicial custody has been granted permission by the court to write the exam.  We will make arrangements accordingly.”

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Government condemned the attack and assured an investigation.

In addition, the imposed curfew would be in effect till the 23rd of April.
