On the 23rd of December, Thursday, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed the Anti-Conversion Bill, 2021. Named as “Karnataka Protection of Right To Freedom Of Religion Bill, 2021” was passed during the Winter Assembly session, with majority of the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in favour.  Despite uproar from Congress, the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai passed the bill, which prevent forceful conversion of religion.

The Karnataka Government, on the 20th of December, Monday, approved the  ‘Karnataka Protection of Right to religion bill, 2021.’

The bill, aims to prohibit conversion of religion by force was approved by the Karnataka Cabinet during a  meeting on Monday.  The approved bill would now be tabled at the Karnataka assembly, on the 21st of December.  The bill approved by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is similar to the ‘Anti Conversion Law’ in Uttar Pradesh.

Mr. Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, said the BJP Government would not allow religious conversion of helpless people in the State.  He said, “Innocent people are being converted across the state.  They are lured by money and financial assistance.”

Religious conversions are not merely about increasing the number of people. The mindset has to be changed. What appears to be luring initially will eventually affect society. “Our government, our nation will not allow such a thing to happen. There is an attempt to encash poverty in our society.”  He further added, “As per law, there is no provision that facilitates luring people for conversions.  There is no scope for this in the Constitution. The people who are opposing the anti-conversion bill were ready to implement it in 2019. Now, they are bound by political compulsions.”

Meanwhile, so far eight BJP ruled states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have passed the anti religion conversion law

The law would impose imprisonment of five to ten years with Rs 25,000 fine to Rs 50,000, if violated.
