Another incident of gang rape from Dumka, Jharkhand triggered people of India.

A 35 year old woman was allegedly gang raped by 17 men in the Mufassil area of Dumka, Jharkhand.

The incident took place on the evening of the 8th of December. The woman and her husband were on their way to home when 17 men held her husband hostage and gang raped her.

Though the incident took place on the evening of the 8th of December, it came into light on the 10th of December.

On Thursday, the 10th of December, the woman reached out to the Mufassil police station.

Sudarshan Mandal, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Santhal area said, “The incident allegedly took place when she was returning home from a market. She has been sent for a medical check up.

In addition, Mr. Mandal said, “The woman said she could identify only one person. We have detained the accused for interrogation. If his involvement was found in the crime, he would be sent to jail.”

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) also took suo motu cognizance of the alleged gangrape.

The NCW in a statement said, “The NCW has come across a media report of the alleged gangrape of a mother of five children by 17 men who held her husband hostage in Jharkhand’s Dumka district. The Commission is seriously concerned about the reported incident and has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter.”

In addition, Rekha Sharma, the Chairperson of the NCW, wrote to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkand and sought completion of probe in two months in cases of sexual assault.

As per the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) probe in the cases of sexual assault should be completed in two months.

The NCW concluded the letter written to DGP with, “The Commission has also sought a detailed action taken report in the matter from the police. A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Superintendent of Police, Dumka.”

The incident created outrage in people who are demanding strict action against the 17 accused.

The police team is investigating the matter and started to manhunt for the remaining accused.
