The counting of votes for the Jharkhand Assembly elections is underway on the 23rd of December.  The counting began at 8:00 A.M., and the results are expected to be announced by the afternoon.

Jharkhand contested the Assembly elections in five phases, starting from the 30th of November to the 20th of December, for 81 Assembly seats.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested the elections alone, the Indian National Congress (INC) allied with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD.)

According to sources, though the BJP contested alone, it is trying to contact the All Jharkhand Students Union or the AJSU Party and the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) leaders.  The sources suggest if the BJP cannot meet the required majority of 41, it might approach the leaders of the AJSU Party and JVM.

BJP leaders are expected to meet Sudesh Mahto, the President of the AJSU Party and Babulal Marandi, the President of the JVM.

The AJSU Party is said to be a kingmaker for any party which is hung in the Jharkhand Assembly elections.  When asked about Sudesh’s preference, he said, “I don’t want to make the government of any party or individual. I want the government of the people of Jharkhand which works for the overall development of the people…. For me, the Congress and the BJP are the same.”

As of now, the alliance of JMM-INC-RJD is leading in 40 seats, whereas the BJP is leading in 30 seats.

An official announcement about the results of the Jharkhand Assembly elections would be made soon.

Stay tuned for further updates.
