On Thursday, the Income Tax Department launched a new facility that will link the Aadhar number to the Permanent Account Number (PAN) online. This link has been made mandatory to file Income Tax returns,

The IT department’s website- https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/- has added a new link on the homepage that makes it easier to link the two unique identity cards to each other. This link, however, mandates the name on the Aadhar and the PAN must be same.

In an advisory to taxpayers, the department said, “After verification from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the linking will be confirmed. In the case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided, Aadhaar OTP (one-time password) will be required.” The OTP will be sent to the registered mobile and also the email of the individual. The advisory also said that he birth date and gender must be same in both the cards to ensure linking.

The department also said, “There is no need to login or be registered on e-filing website (of the IT department.) This facility can be used by anyone to link their Aadhaar with PAN.” Under the Finance Act 2017, the government has made it mandatory for Aadhar number to file Income Tax returns. Aadhar has also been made mandatory for the Permanent Account Number Application from the July 1st of 2017.

Till date, 1.18 million Aadhar numbers have been linked to PAN database by the department. Aadhar is issued by the UIDAI to the residents of India, PAN is a ten character alphanumeric number issued to any person, firm or entity by the IT department.
