The Indian National Congress (INC) is expected to elect a new President for the Party in January 2021.

According to sources, during the last Congress Working Committee (CWC) held on the 24th of August, they decided to elect a new president 6 months with proper election process.

The Monday’s CWC meeting was called after  a section of the INC leaders complained of the leadership under Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the INC and demanded a new strategy for the same.

However, Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the INC and other senior leaders insisted, Ms. Gandhi to continue as the interim President for the next six months

The decision to elect new President in January 2021 was taken by the CWC as there would be no Assembly elections during that time.

In 2021, elections for five assemblies—Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry are scheduled to be held in April.

If the new President would be elected in January, the INC would get enough time to come up with a rejigged team headed by a new leader.
