Ms. Hekani Jakhalu won as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Nagaland’s Dimapur III Assembly constituency.

On the 2nd of March, Thursday, after rounds of votes counting, Ms. Hekani Jakhalu today scripted history by becoming the first ever woman to be elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.  She won polls from the Dimapur-III Assembly seat on the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) ticket.

Highlighting about the life of Ms. Hekani Jakhalu, she is a law activist and a social entrepreneur.  The 48 year old lady is the founder of YouthNet Nagaland, which helps the youths of Nagaland to pursue business opportunities.

A recipient of NariShakti Awardee, Hekani Jakhalu obtained Masters degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in Law in 2013.

Hekani Jakhalu was one of three women candidates – Salhoutuo Kruse, Hukali Sema and Rosy Thompson to contest Assembly elections this time.

NDPP is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Jakhalu won the Dimapur-III seat by 1,536 votes. She defeated her nearest rival Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas.)
