Mr. Oommmen Chandy, the former Chief Minister of Kerala and a senior Indian National Congress (INC) leader passed away during the early hours of the 18th of July, Tuesday.

According to sources, Mr. Oommen Chandy, 79 years old, was suffering from throat cancer and took his last breath at a private hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka.  He wasn’t doing well healthwise and was staying in Bengaluru for his treatment since November 2o22.

Mr. Oommen Chandy he won his first election in 1970 from his home constituency Puthupally in Kottayam district, Kerala.  It is to be noted, Mr. Oommen Chandy was the sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Puthuppally constituency.  He served as the MLA until his last breath, for an uninterrupted 53 years.

Upon hearing about the demise of Mr. Oommen Chandy, the INC leaders and other political leaders started pouring condolences and expressed grief.   Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala, said, “We started our political journey together through student politics and continued a very long way.  Chandy was always with the people and it’s tough to say goodbye to him.”

Mr. Oommen Chandy’s long time close aide and the country’s longest serving Defence Minister Mr. A.K. Antony said, “He will go down as the most popular politician in Kerala as even when on his deathbed, his only thinking was how to help people.  Kerala will miss Chandy very badly.” 

In addition, about the last rites of the veteran Congress leader, Mr. Oommen Chandy’s mortal remains would be brought to Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and would be taken to Puthupally, his home constituency.  The funeral would be conducted with full state honors on the 19th of July, Wednesday.

As a mark of respect, the Kerala Government has declared a public holiday on Tuesday, the 18th of July and also announced a two day mourning in the southern state.
